My life in Miniture
This was a project I undertook as part of my Art course I did alongside my bookbinding apprenticeship, the brief being to produce an art work that represented oneself. This is what I came up with, each of the books contains illustrations and text related to different areas of interest I have, the albums are among my favourites, and the photograph albums have miniaturised pictures of my loved ones and places. The sardine tin is just to show scale. Stew

Book-back Sculpture
.jpg)
This sculpture is made from the debris and detritus scrapped from the spines of old books. During the process of repair and restoration of a book we use starch paste to soften and remove the old animal glue and spine lining materials that reinforce and support the book. This material is often extreamly old and can contain old paper cuttings, engravings, gold leaf, leather and other binding materials. I always felt odd throwing this away so started to collect it on baords, and biult up over time I decided these make rather interesting, historic sculptures. I have many in the bindery now and always have a couple on the go.

A Journal - Design Binding
Simply an A5 hand sewn journal, the binding is made using sculpted mill board with holes cut, covered in black & yellow Morocco, and the holes also lined with this matieral. It has angled raised bands, hand sewn silk headbands, with abstract lettering and double warp Buckram side. The end papers are Indian marbled hand made rag paper.

Log Cabins - Design Binding
A project based on the content of a book, designed to emulate a cabin door. It is a full leather binding, the spine area is mid brown Morocco and the lighter side panels are calf, the calf was soaked and pressed with wood to produce the wood grain impression in the leather. Then the detail pieces secured to the from using brass pins. The end papers were hand made using mid green paper and green acrylic paint pressed on with reeds.
